ChatGPT Now Accessible via WhatsApp and Phone Calls: Here’s How

OpenAI has introduced a new way to interact with its AI chatbot, ChatGPT, making it accessible via phone calls in the U.S. and globally through WhatsApp. This move aims to simplify access to AI for a broader audience.

How It Works

  • Phone Calls (U.S. Only): U.S.-based users can dial 1-800-CHATGPT for free, with each phone number limited to 15 minutes of call time per month.
  • WhatsApp (Global): Users worldwide can message ChatGPT on WhatsApp by contacting 1-800-242-8478.

Designed for Simplicity

“This initiative is a stepping stone for AI newcomers, offering a user-friendly and approachable experience,” said OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil during a livestream event.

The phone service leverages OpenAI’s Realtime API, while the WhatsApp integration is powered by a streamlined version of GPT-4, dubbed GPT-4o mini, through the WhatsApp API.

Entry-Level AI Access

These new features are designed as an introduction to AI, providing a simpler experience compared to the full functionality available on OpenAI’s primary web platform. Advanced users seeking higher limits and personalisation options are encouraged to stick with the traditional ChatGPT interface.

Addressing Privacy Concerns

OpenAI spokesperson Taya Christianson assured users that data collected from calls and messages would not be used to train large language models, easing privacy concerns.

Bridging the Gap

The integration with WhatsApp, which boasts over two billion active users globally, underscores OpenAI’s strategy to make AI accessible to diverse audiences, including those less familiar with technology.

This project draws comparisons to Google’s 2007 GOOG-411, a voice-based directory service used to collect voice samples for speech recognition technology. While OpenAI’s goals differ, the initiative similarly seeks to connect advanced technology with everyday users.

Part of a Bigger Strategy

The WhatsApp and phone services are part of OpenAI’s December announcements, which also included the launch of Sora, an AI-powered text-to-video generator, and a premium subscription plan offering access to its most advanced models for $200 per month.

Future Plans

OpenAI hinted that these features are experimental and may evolve based on user demand. For now:

  • The phone service is exclusive to the U.S.
  • The WhatsApp integration is available globally.

This milestone reflects OpenAI’s commitment to making AI tools more accessible and adaptable for all users, regardless of their tech expertise.
